| There are two meanings of the word "commend." One means to heap praise on someone, the other means to give something or someone over to the care of another.
These two meanings are so unrelated as to be almost opposites.
The daycare provider told the young mother, "I commend your children...." |

Even dictionaries don't all agree of the proper usage of these.

| A "comfit" is a confection consisting of a nut, seed or fruit coated with sugar.
So is "discomfiting" taking one away? |

Backward and backwards -- I always get these confused. Backward is an adjective and backwards is a adverb, but also backwards is chiefly British and Americans use backward for either. |

| - My alarm clock goes off at 6:30.
- My alarm clock comes on at 6:30.
- A smoking pan on the stove inevitably makes my smoke alarm come on / go off.
I guess it's mostly true with alarms, which "go off" when they "come on." Not so true with other devices:
- The thermostat makes my furnace come on / go off at the same time every day.
