| SCOTUS will be overturning Roe in he next week or so. What will be the country's reaction?
There will be protests in the streets.
Political commentators will slam the court.
Democrats will make noise about passing laws (but they don't have the votes).
In the end, there isn't ANYTHING that ANYONE can do. The right-wing ideologues won this fight, imposing the will of the 28% minority on the majority of 72%. American women will just have to live with it for another generation or two, until the political winds blow their way again. It's sad, but that's American pseudo-democracy. |

| Mind-boggling mental contortions: - Quote :
- Ms Fitch - who declined to be interviewed - had argued that overturning Roe v Wade would be "game-changing", "uplifting" women by eliminating what she described as a false choice between family and career.
"Fifty years ago, for professional women, they wanted you to make a choice. Now you don't have to," she said on Pro-Life Weekly. "You have the option in life to really achieve your dreams, your goals, and you can have those beautiful children as well."
If she wins the case, and Roe v Wade falls, some 40 million women may lose access to abortion, pro-choice advocates warn. It could also make Ms Fitch, a single working parent of three, a Republican superstar and poster-child for her own argument: modern women don't need abortion to have it all. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-61789443 - Quote :
- As Republican Attorneys General faced 2018 re-election bids and continued their legal challenges to Obama-era environmental regulations, fossil fuel companies poured millions of dollars into the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA), a political nonprofit that spends money to elect GOP AGs. That trend has continued into this year. From 2017 through mid-2019, oil, gas, and coal companies, trade associations, fossil fuel utilities, and industry executives donated over $6.7 million to RAGA, a CMD investigation has found. Fifty-five companies and trade groups and four executives made these donations.
Giving the most money to RAGA since 2017 are oil and natural gas exploration company Noble Energy ($1,020,000), oil refining and materials conglomerate Koch Industries ($755,000), natural gas energy supplier NextEra Energy Resources ($500,855), and oil and gas drillers Anadarko Petroleum ($500,000) and PDC Energy ($350,000).
In Mississippi, successful AG candidate Lynn Fitch got a $150,000 in direct campaign donations as well as more than $76,000 worth of in-kind contributions from RAGA’s Mississippi PAC, according to state campaign finance data. |

- Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who also voted for Kavanaugh, similarly suggested he and Justice Neil Gorsuch weren’t honest with the Senate about their views on Roe.
“I trusted Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh when they testified under oath that they also believed Roe v. Wade was settled legal precedent and I am alarmed they chose to reject the stability the ruling has provided for two generations of Americans,” Manchin said in a statement Friday. I know there's no precedent for this, but these are unprecedented times. The Judicial Committee of the House should IMMEDIATELY file impeachment papers against Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett for lying UNDER OATH to the Congress. |

| Well I guess this shouldn't be so surprising. I've often wondered how abortion became a "conservative issue" since traditional conservatism is about small government and individual freedoms. It turns out there may be an element of simple mathematical ignorance involved. - Quote :
- Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.) said the quiet part out loud Saturday when she thanked former President Donald Trump at an Illinois rally for his role in overturning Roe v. Wade by picking conservative justices. “President Trump, on behalf of all the MAGA patriots in America, I want to thank you for the historic victory for white life in the Supreme Court,” she said, to cheers and applause.
As for “white life,” some conservatives see abortion crackdowns as a way to keep up numbers of white citizens amid evolving American demographics. It plays into the racist “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory that Democrats and others are covertly plotting to replace whites with people of color and immigrants. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/mary-miller-illinois-roe-white-life-trump_n_62b7e95be4b0c77098bd26dbBut, as readily-available statistics show, two-thirds of all abortions are had by women of color. So by banning abortion, conservatives are merely (and rather quickly) accelerating the "great replacement" and within a generation the country will be overrun by black babies. Unwanted black babies, from poor women, using up more welfare and growing up in terrible circumstances and maybe turning to lives of crime to survive. Well done, Mary. |

Therefore, states which outlaw abortion could see abortion clinics pop up, run by the tribes, providing another revenue stream (like the casinos) for the beleaguered Native reservations and the Republican governors couldn't touch them.
The Indian tribes are afraid of retribution. |

| The experience of consciousness is a fascinating study, and with the advancement of AI it will very likely be up for public discussion in the next decade. Once a computer becomes sentient, would it be a crime to switch it off?
Since a VLSI computer chip is the beginning of a sentient computer, should it be a crime to destroy one? If you own one, are you obligated to build the computer to house it? |

| As the article you linked says, the more interesting situations are in red states, where DAs are promising not to prosecute even where abortion bans have already gone into effect. |

Ted Cruz is also onboard with outlawing gay marriage. So... what happens to all the couples who have already married? What happens to the houses they own together, the businesses they run, the children they adopted? Unlike Roe, you can't put this genie back in the, uh, vagina. The Republican Party, apparently not satisfied with cutting itself off from all women voters and all non-Christian voters and all people of color, now wishes to add all non-traditional sexual orientations to its enemies list. Good luck winning another election anywhere outside Dixieland, which is still litigating the Civil War. |

| Aid Access is an Austrian-based organization that delivers world-wide. It would no doubt piss off a lot of Evangelicals if they got publicized all over the US. Aid Access |

| And I still say "Pro-Choice" is a piss poor name as a rallying cry. Planned Parenthood should immediately change the movement's name to "Anti-Forced Birth." |

| I haven't heard any outcries about actor Anne Heche being declared "brain dead" and her family looking for recipients to donate her organs.
A fetus at 28 weeks is also "brain dead" in that there isn't a fully-developed brain yet. |

| I wonder. Since women's lack of bodily autonomy was the basis for the overruling of Roe v. Wade....
Could that same judicial philosophy be applied to make rape legal? |
