SCOTUS has weakened the federal government to the point of irrelevancy.  We're back to having a Confederacy of Disunited States.  AKA a confederacy of dunces.

Let's consider the consequences:
  • Women who travel across state borders to get abortions, will they be imprisoned upon their return?  Some won't return.

  • Banks who want a piece of the cannabis industry are now free to ignore federal prohibitions

  • Fetal mortality and child mortality will skyrocket

  • RU486 (Mifeprex) sales will skyrocket

  • States are free to pass any laws they want that violate federal law

  • American Taliban will turn some states into terror camps. They may have to restrict emigration to prevent population/tax base loss

  • Wars between the states are not inconceivable. Tariffs, trade agreements, contracts, worker protections, standing military

  • Except for the Gulf of Mexico, most ports are in liberal states. Therefore, an embargo on goods leaving the liberal states for the Confederacy would accelerate their demise

Uh, yeah.  62% of the American public is against overturning Roe.  Only 38% support it.

So I guess the "radical left" includes an almost super-majority of voters who oppose the ideologically radical out-of-touch court YOU stacked.

Another poll publicized tonight has it at 70% to 28%.  Either way, HUGELY unpopular decision, as the massive coast-to-coast demonstrations today proved.

Not that SCOTUS gives a shit.  They're paid by The Federalist Society to do one thing, and that's overturn Roe.  [Hee-hee, someone inserted the word "terrorist organization" in their Wikipedia page... LOL]

The society looks to Federalist Paper Number 78 for an articulation of the virtue of judicial restraint, as written by Alexander Hamilton: "It can be of no weight to say that the courts, on the pretense of a repugnancy, may substitute their own pleasure to the constitutional intentions of the legislature... The courts must declare the sense of the law; and if they should be disposed to exercise WILL instead of JUDGMENT, the consequence would equally be the substitution of their pleasure to that of the legislative body."
"Judicial restraint" is NOT overturning 50 years of case law to suit somebody's religious views.

Former President Pro Tempore of the U.S. Senate Orrin Hatch[47]
Senator Ted Cruz, Republican Senator of Texas[57]
Senator Josh Hawley, Republican Senator of Missouri[58]
Michael Chertoff, former United States Secretary of Homeland Security[59]
28th United States Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia (son of Justice Antonin Scalia)

I'm very disappointed with the coverage this is getting however. Most channels, most news outlets are framing it as the death of abortion rights, the end of a woman's right to choose, an assault on women's health.

It's not that.

Overturning Roe doesn't make abortion illegal coast-to-coast, it only removes the federal ban on making it illegal. So far between 21 and 29 states have in place laws, or soon will, that make abortion illegal once Roe is overturned. So, anger at SCOTUS is somewhat misguided. It's state legislatures that should be blamed. Progressive states like WA, OR, CA, MN and others have vowed to keep it legal and safe.

Second, the effects of illegal abortion will soon be felt in states that ban it. Higher mortality rates, higher suicide rates, more poverty, abandoned babies, women leaving the states. This decision does not come without cost.

Third, in fact this awful decision may well motivate turnout in 2022 and 2024. It could backfire on the 28%.

Fourth, SCOTUS appears to be planning to codify the "life begins at conception" theory into law, giving full human rights to cytoblasts. Be prepared for some REALLY bizarre consequences of that, as pregnant women will be charged with manslaughter for miscarrying, charged two airplane tickets, arrested for doing extreme sports. Testing this new legal theory will lead to some jaw-dropping court cases.

Fifth, a conception ban, a ban on same sex marriages, and a ban on interracial marriages are also on TFS docket. Expect them to fast-track the cases to beat the impending pendulum swing.

I've been hearing some new terms for the "Pro-Life" movement, which is after all, an overly positive term for what is a very dark and ugly movement.

Michael Moore calls it "Forced Birth."

Lawrence O'Donnell last night called it "forced pregnancy."

Either one will do.

I'm not pro-murdering babies.
I'm pro-Becky who found out at her 20 week anatomy scan that the infant she had been so excited to bring into this world had developed without life sustaining organs.
I'm pro-Susan who was sexually assaulted on her way home from work, only to come to the horrific realization that her assailant planted his seed in her when she got a positive pregnancy test result a month later.
I'm pro-Theresa who hemorrhaged due to a placental abruption, causing her parents, spouse, and children to have to make the impossible decision on whether to save her or her unborn child.
I'm pro-little Cathy who had her innocence ripped away from her by someone she should have been able to trust and her 11 year old body isn't mature enough to bear the consequence of that betrayal.
I'm pro-Melissa who's working two jobs just to make ends meet and has to choose between bringing another child into poverty or feeding the children she already has because her spouse walked out on her.
I'm pro-Brittany who realizes that she is in no way financially, emotionally, or physically able to raise a child.
I'm pro-Emily who went through IVF, ending up with SIX viable implanted eggs requiring selective reduction in order to ensure the safety of her and a SAFE amount of fetuses.
I'm pro-Jessica who is FINALLY getting the strength to get away from her physically abusive spouse only to find out that she is carrying the monster's child.
I'm pro-Vanessa who went into her confirmation appointment after YEARS of trying to conceive only to hear silence where there should be a heartbeat.
I'm pro-Lindsay who lost her virginity in her sophomore year with a broken condom and now has to choose whether to be a teenage mom or just a teenager.
I'm pro-Courtney who just found out she's already 13 weeks along, but the egg never made it out of her fallopian tube so either she terminates the pregnancy or risks dying from internal bleeding.
You can argue and say that I'm pro-choice all you want, but the truth is:
I'm pro-life.
Their lives.
Women's lives.
You don't get to pick and choose which scenarios should be accepted.
Women's rights are meant to protect ALL women, regardless of their situation!

Dark money sources have spent enormous sums to overturn Roe.

I'm not exactly sure why.

I'm pretty sure it has NOTHING to do with "savin' babies" and a lot more to do with rolling back all of the progressive social reforms since 1965.  Dark Money favors the white Anglo-Saxon oligarchy that ruled before that time, when capitalism was unfettered, environmental protections didn't interfere with empire building, and women and blacks knew their place.

I seriously doubt, however, that it's possible to buy the '50s back.

I don't mean to be CYNICAL.... but all of these are extremely white names.  Considering that two-thirds of all abortions in the US are people of color, the names should be Deshandra, Tyresse, Mariana, Isabella, Fatima, Nuor and Tamar.

Unless the original author was TRYING to skew the perceptions....

White ladies will by-and-large still be able to terminate unwanted pregnancies.  The new laws, uh, aren't aimed at them.

Kinda surprised I haven't seen any political cartoons comparing Roe to the World Trade Center. It was built in 1973 too.

I saw a very powerful one a few days ago. The stars and stripes proudly flying, except the stripes were bloodstains and the stars were coat hangers.

Edit: Found it on Facebook.

I checked online to see if anybody had created an editorial cartoon equating Roe with the WTC, and didn't see any.  So I sent the idea to the best cartoonist on the page of Roe cartoons, Mike Luckovich of the Atlanta Journal Constitution (TWO Pulitzer prizes!).  He wrote back saying he liked the idea.  I encouraged him to use it.

Twin Towers labeled "Roe" and "Wade."  Amy Coney Barrett careening toward them with her judicial robes folded into a wing suit.  I can see it in my head....

From Quora: answered by Darrell Nelson, who I don't know.

What are your thoughts on Justice Alito's draft Supreme Court opinion on Roe v Wade using the phrase "domestic supply of infants"?

For a judge I find it amazing he didn’t think about what it means if women’s wombs are to serve the state to supply the “domestic supply of infants”, it means the reason for forcing women to give birth is taking over the womb for the “Public Use”. That puts it in to the eminent domain category:

No person shall be . . . deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

I believe every woman who gets pregnant and has to carry it for one second longer than necessary, due to any government regulations (waiting periods) should sue the government for just compensation. If the government needs to force more births, they need to pay for that.

If you are going to treat women like property, they should at least be given all the rights of property. The state can’t force you to house a person in your home without paying you. Yet, they can take over a womb for nine months and force a woman to take care of all the bills.

The response to the complaint that women are being treated as property falls short if they aren’t even being treated that well.

The "domestic supply of infants" argument and Amy Coney Barrett's referring, in her oral arguments last December, to "Safe Haven" laws have one fundamental flaw in their reasoning.

The babies given up for adoption will mostly be Black, Latino, NA, mixed race. White little bundles of joy will be in the distinct minority.

Compare to adoption statistics:
Quote :
Race/Ethnic Origin

White: 49%
Black/African American: 16%
American Indian/Alaska Native: 2%
Asian/Pacific Islander: 10%
Hispanic/Latino: 19%
Other: 4%

Heard an interesting report this morning.

WHEN abortion becomes illegal, it is expected it will be regulated state-by-state.

American Indian tribes are expressly released from state regulation, as sovereign territories.

Therefore, states which outlaw abortion could see abortion clinics pop up, run by the tribes, providing another revenue stream (like the casinos) for the beleaguered Native reservations and the Republican governors couldn't touch them.
Outlawing Abortion - Page 3 Indian_reservations_in_the_Continental_United_States
Outlawing Abortion - Page 3 Scotus_landing_page_map_26_states

And there's a certain ironic symmetry.  For hundreds of years white people killed NA people, performed secret sterilizations, kidnapped their children, "forced the Indian" out of them.  Now maybe the Indians will be able to return the favor. Outlawing Abortion - Page 3 1f47f

With Trump, the absurdity level is already off the charts, making it hard to top it in a cartoon.
