Just filled out my ballot for 2022. There were a few candidates I was strongly for, a few issues I felt strongly about, and a few candidates I was strongly AGAINST.
That raised an idea. Instead of just voting FOR the candidate you prefer (+1), you should be able to use your vote, if you prefer, to vote AGAINST (- 1) a candidate you strongly oppose. Your "minus one vote" would subtract one vote from that candidate's tally.
That way, candidates with strong negatives would have a harder time bamboozling the undecideds, and if their platform was aimed at enriching a minority, that minority would have less chance of imposing their will on the majority.
Also... we have a number of judges running unopposed. If you're running unopposed, and nobody votes for you, do you still win?
