Goofy idea or brilliance?

I've seen the same model used for t-shirts (if enough people sign up for the shirt, then they print a batch and mail them out). It's presumably more economical than either producing a bunch of shirts that don't sell or producing individual shirts on demand. But whether it will work for stuff more complex than t-shirts, I don't know.
