When you consider that tortoises live to 150, and cockatiels to 100, why would elephants and whales be limited to 80-90 years?

And by extension, the short lives and rapid reproduction gives mammals a higher rate of evolution, allowing us to speciate faster, to adapt better to different and changing environments and capitalize on genetic accidents to create adaptive benefits like bigger brains and protective hair.
