I need to get from my USB hub to a new portable USB drive, a distance of 5-1/2".

The shortest USB cable I can find online is 1 meter (39") and the shortest one I've been able to find in person is 6ft.

Buy the one-meter cable and tell yourself, "I may need to move that some day, so I'll get this cable for that possibility." Convince yourself that you are intelligently planning ahead.

I think I have several 3-meter (maybe 3-ft?) cables. I can use of of them in a pinch.

Seems wasteful though, making those electrons go so far.

DIY?

Actually, no individual electron goes any farther no matter the cable length, you just involve a lot more electrons. Think of it as a jobs program for electrons.

Possibly. In a pinch.

I have it on good authority that cables can be rolled up. Of course, that's cables for Windows machines; it may not work for Appholes.
