I just re-watched
Dune on Netflix, to get ready for the imminent release of
part 2.
I loved the
book for many years. Since I read it as a teenager, I guess I got to it pretty much when it first came out (published 1965). And I was keen to see the
David Lynch movie when that came out in 1984. But that was such a disappointment that I wasn't at all enthusiastic about this latest attempt to adapt the book.
I was wrong. Dune part 1 was really pretty damn good. The Lynch movie suffered from trying to be too true to the book, and from trying to wrap up the universe-spanning storylines in the last 15 minutes. Those are the specific areas that Villeneuve is working to avoid. This movie does take some liberties with the source material, but the movie is better for those changes. And the extra scope provided by the two-movie length will make this all work, I think. I'm looking forward to part 2.
