I have gotten to sixty-nine years of age without ever hearing or knowing that my birthday, April 26, is Confederate Memorial Day. It's an official state holiday in Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina. It is commemorated in Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida, Texas and Kentucky. It was formerly recognized in Missouri, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana and Virginia.
How could I have never heard this before? The Ladies Memorial Association cleans the graves of Confederate soldiers and place flowers in their honor. It is a time for reflecting on the great injustice of the Northern states freeing he Negroes against the wishes of the Southern states.
