Started watching this series, about abuses of the internet. First episode was about "swatting" where videogamers call 9-1-1 on each other to interrupt during a competition, or to get back at a sore winner. The police show up to an address expecting a hostage situation or a bomb scare, and everyone's night is ruined.
The story followed one particular gamer who really got into swatting, started to call in bomb scares to schools and businesses and TV stations, just to try to make the news.
In one unfortunate instance he gave the wrong address, and the cops busted in on some guys just having dinner. An overeager cop shot one of them dead without provocation.
He didn't face any consequences, because he was a cop.
The swatter did go to jail, as did two of his accomplices, for misuse of 9-1-1 leading to manslaughter (ironically).
But here's the thing. The show showed footage of the videogames these swatters were playing, and they're the most hateful juvenile first person shooter games imaginable. You hide behind a rock with your AK47, jump out periodically and spray bullets, everyone in front of you falls over dead bloodlessly, and you advance forward. Gosh doesn't that sound like fun.
And great training for the Uvalde shooter.
