Day-After responses to the Mueller report mostly talk about how scary it is that Russians swayed our election, and the need to prevent a 2020 recurrence.
That's not going to be so easy.
Their methods mostly consisted of:
- Buying ads on social media
- Posing as outraged US citizens on social media
- Creating bots that retweet divisive messages millions of times
- Arranging street demonstration for & against candidates, for & against divisive issues like gun control and the Civil War
- Stoking fear that our election system is rigged
All of these are vulnerabilities kept open for reasons of freedom of expression, freedom of association, freedom of assembly.
An open democracy such as ours depends on an informed electorate, and the common sense of people to cut through spam. Unfortunately, we have a whole NETWORK devoted to disseminating untruths. They've created a whole underclass of people immune to facts.
Maybe the answer to election tampering is in the Fairness Doctrine.
