I see "Roma" was nominated. I saw it in theater with a friend of mine who really wanted to see it for his birthday. I was not impressed.
It had good cinematography-- it was all in high contrast black&white-- but the story was shit. A housekeeper gets pregnant by her boyfriend, and her life is upended. I mean that would be traumatic for her, but it's not much of a framework for a major motion picture. Everything else about the picture was dull and ordinary, thoroughly unremarkable. We are treated to long scenes of her picking up dog shit, doing laundry, cooking meals. The movie felt 14 hours long.
I suppose that means it will win.
