Why do these giant companies do such childish, meaningless things?
I understand that they have an obligation under the law to actively protect anything they have copyrighted or patented or they can lose the right to them (as Xerox and Kleenex know all too well), but come on - fucking Star Trek?

Fucking lawyers.

There's (probably) no money to be made with a fan film, and it costs the studio nothing to let fans have their fun. Why not encourage the devoted fans to promise a percentage of their nonexistent profits to the studio as "licensing fees" and everybody go about their business?

No, instead a dickwad law firm generates massive ill-will in the fan community, and massive fees for themselves.

There was a report that J. J. Abrams said the lawsuit was "going away". And now this.
