The Catholic Church is the very definition of sleazy, and they really need to be knocked down a peg or two.
However, I don't see it happening.
It's doubtful I think that the US, or any other nation, has clear jurisdiction over the international transglobal corporation known the the Church. Even if they COULD file racketeering charges, the Church has nearly infinite funds and lots of political clout. Such a lawsuit would surely stall, and eventually be thrown out.
The Church has been having serious difficulty attracting clergy for decades. It is well known as a magnet for, a shelter for and a haven for pedophiles. That has become their recruiting tool, and I don't see that changing. The Church has made only token efforts to rein in abusive priests because their ranks are needed to fleece the flock. The Church has no interest in reducing priestly abuse. Their only interest is in hiding it, downplaying it, avoiding publicity (to non-priest candidates) and eliminating the lawsuits.
It's their new business model.
