I got about 100 pages into this award-winning novel by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, when Roosevelt's quote came to mind -- and would not leave. This is a book about people. The main character, Ifemelu, is a Nigerian who comes to the US for education then has trouble re-integrating in Nigerian society after returning home. The first hundred pages detail her family, her boyfriend, her boyfriend's family... people. After 100 pages I started to realize the book wasn't going to be about anything more. I started skimming, dropping in and reading a few pages every 50 pages, and yup, the book is homogenous. I'm done. |
