Critical Race Theory

"Critical race theory" is a 40-year old reassessment of US history to include the contributions of Blacks and their systematic oppression by white supremacists.

It's pretty indisputable.

It's also illegal to teach in a dozen Republican-led states because it undermines their basic tenets of white supremacy.  They are exactly right about something: students ignorant of history will continue to believe untrue things.

But I see this fight as one of the largest ones out there -- the fight over who writes history.  Is it going to be factual, or continue the false narratives of the past 150 years?  Future healing of this country depends on it.

Heard a term on the radio this morning I hadn't heard before: BIPOC. Black, Indigenous & People of Color. I think maybe NW would do as well.

Symbolic actions like removing confederate statues, renaming Army bases and making Juneteenth a federal holiday are typical of politicians' reactions to difficult challenges: Do something meaningless but visible, and make believe you did change.

NoCo is disgusted.

Fourteen Republican representatives voted against making Juneteenth a federal holiday.  Their reasons are illuminating:

Rep. Matt Rosendale (Mont.) went a step further, saying the day was merely “an effort by the left” to push “identity politics.”

“Let’s call an ace an ace,” the lawmaker said in a statement Wednesday. “This is an effort by the left to create a day out of whole cloth to celebrate identity politics as part of its larger efforts to make ‘critical race theory’ the reigning ideology of our country. Since I believe in treating everyone equally, regardless of race, and that we should be focused on what unites us rather than our differences, I will vote ‘no.’”

Incidentally, the phrase "Let's call an ace an ace" is his own construction, an attempt to avoid the racially ambiguous "Let's call a spade a spade" which actually has no racial roots.

Juneteenth is not a federal holiday for celebration. It should be seen as a pause, a day of reflection, a reckoning of this nation’s racist past. It’s an opportunity to teach truth, to fill the airwaves with stories of African-American history.

Columbus Day could use a facelift too.

Critical Race Theory is still completely misunderstood by the willfully ignorant.

Uppity rightwing bigots don't want students "indoctrinated" or "brainwashed" with non-White Supremacist ideology, but they're all-in with indoctrinating students -- even Jewish students -- with mandatory Jesus training.

By all means, don't allow Critical Race Theory to be taught, but "how to be wonderful Nazis"? That's fine.
