| By 1966 France’s love affair with cinema verité was still going strong. This film, though based on the wispiest of stories and filmed on a minuscule budget, won just about every award available. Large parts of it were improvised by the actors on the spot, and it shows. The film flops back and forth between color and black & white due to budget constraints. The overwhelming French schmaltz music is suffocating. But Anouk Aimeé, fresh from working with Fellini, is stunning. |
