Michael Moore has never been subtle, but his new movie is like a locomotive running over you. He first asks, "How the fuck did we elect Donald Trump?" Then he goes back in history, to Reagan, Bush Sr, Clinton, Bush Jr and Obama, and elaborates all the moves each one of them made to strip democracy. He spends a fair amount of time telling the incredible venal story of Flint MI. He calls out politicians, he calls out social media, he calls out cable news, he calls out corporate greed, he calls out deregulation, he calls out the financial crash of 2008 and the ill-advised response to stop the hemorrhaging without fixing the underlying problems.
It's all true, but it's a little bit overwhelming. Okay, A LOT overwhelming.
He makes the valid point that one election isn't going to correct everything that's gone wrong in this country. He puts some faith in the next generation, the Parkland protestors, to straighten things out.
But overall the effect of his movie, on me anyway, was to reinforce my resignation that it's too late, the bad guys have won.
