Here's a thread for those devices which make you ask, "Why?"
From the hydraulic brake to the GPS locator, technology has provided many beneficial and just plain fun additions to our lives. But sometimes, the creators miss the usefulness target by a mile. It may be the very concept of the device which is ludicrous, or ot may be additions to a simple device which makes it idiotic.

I'll begin the list with the Fitbit and similar activity-tracking devices. Other than - IMO - their lack of real benefit, the addition of the ability of all the users to save their every movement - and location - on the internet may cause problems.

Don't own one, don't want one but I can see some utility for some people -- like the guy behind me in the restaurant at lunch today, who said "I make it a point to get in 4,200 or more steps every day, which works out to about 4 miles."

Have no idea if his math is right... but I wouldn't want to have to count those manually.

Why count them at all? What's the value in knowing how many of your steps are in a mile?
