A mostly-true film about Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple in Virginia in the late 1950s. They were arrested for miscegenation and forced to leave Virginia for 25 years. Through a series of events mostly beyond their control they ended up back in Virginia, got arrested again, and decided they had to fight the government.
It went all the way to the Supreme Court where they won -- leading to an amendment to the Constitution. They did not attend the Court's hearing though, as they were simple country folk who just wanted to be left alone.
The movie is very quiet and understated. The acting is great but you don't get the feeling that they're acting -- everyone is just low key and matter-of-fact.
Amazing to consider we're basically in the same situation today with same-sex marriage. "Redefining marriage" indeed!
