I agree that large parts of it are pretty much indecipherable without a guide. But following along with the lyrics isn't that hard, because the singer does basically follow them. The deviations are quite minor and insignificant.

I remember the song quite well. It was very popular for a long time. I had never heard of the issue with the lyrics and the FBI until I recently read an article about Jack Ely dying last year.
