PostSubject: Dallas Police Shootings   Sat Jul 09, 2016 7:08 am

On Thursday I was watching coverage of the protests in many major cities about the recent killings of black men by white police officers, and I said (half facetiously) "Somebody should shoot a police officer, so they know what it's like to be targeted."  Not a half hour later news came in that a disgruntled black nationalist in Dallas shot eleven police officers, killing five of them.

Of course, the police response nationwide is not, "Oh wow, this is what it feels like to be a target."  It was more, "This is a war.  Shoot first, ask questions later."

Helter skelter, man. Helter skelter.

One Shooter; No Snipers—Grossly Inaccurate Police and Media Information About Dallas Killings

It's Not Hyperbole: This Week's Police Violence and Political Mayhem Show a Fragile and Flailing America

What I notice on Facebook is that the black and left-ish people are rather upset with all this. The right-wingers are still going on about Hillary's emails.

The cops killed the shooter with a bomb carried by a robot.

Since when are the police allowed to use fucking bombs?

That is a bunch of shit.

An obvious and yet non-obvious observation. Not obvious for most white Americans.

Also keep an eye on this.

Americans should be embarrassed that it takes a foreign newspaper to do this.

Americans should be embarrassed that the NRA controls our media.

This guy agrees with you. I know Noco doesn't like him, but this is a discussion that needs to happen, and he makes some good points.

A frightening precedent: Can we talk about the Dallas police using a bomb robot to kill a man?

There’s an enormous difference between killing a suspect while exchanging gunfire and methodically sending in a bot to execute him.

Johnson had a constitutional right to due process, no matter how despicable his crimes. If the police could have contained him or waited him out, we have to ask whether or not they had an obligation to do so. The use of deadly force absent the imminent threat of death is a violation of the constitution and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which the U.S. has ratified.

Hogswoggle.

Sending in a bomb-enabled robot is no different from taking him out with a sniper, and if police couldn't get a clear shot at him, the sniper option wasn't viable.  "Waited him out"?  For how long?

Trapped in the parking garage of a local college, Johnson negotiated for hours with the police, reportedly refusing to cooperate.
He was killed at 2:30am after killing the police officers about 9:00 pm.  That's 5-1/2 hours of negotiation -- with no signs of progress.

Yes, due process and a trial of his peers is his constitutional right, but nobody insists a cop killer who refuses to surrender without a fight is worth more lives to capture alive.

Bomb robot = sniper on wheels.

I'll tell you what bothers me, and it's not the use of a bomb robot to take out the shooter.

It's the universal media coverage of those "poor police officers who were gunned down" with barely a mention of the shooter's motives.  That whole "anger over white officers gunning down unarmed black men in cold blood" thing -- while in no way justifying Johnson's actions -- barely merits a mention.  This shooter was not a random nutcase -- he represents, in a more extreme version, a viewpoint shared by a great many members of the African American community.

This is a discussion this country needs to have, and it's a situation that's only going to get worse until it gets talked about and changes get made.  The shooting of 11 police officers does not negate the bigger problem here.

You want another real thing to be outraged about?  Something I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else?

After the Army initiated proceedings to dishonorably discharge him, Johnson, at the advice of his lawyer, waived his right to a hearing in exchange for a lesser charge. He was sent back to the U.S. with an Army recommendation of other than honorable discharge, considered by his lawyer to be a "highly unusual" decision because counseling is usually ordered first. However, Johnson was instead honorably discharged in September 2014.[64][65][66] Johnson remained in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), and was part of the IRR at the time of his death.[58]
Thank you Ronald Reagan.

For as long as it takes. The man was not in a position of imminent danger to others. The police had no right to execute him. None at all. They were pissed off because he had killed some cops. What the fuck were they doing with C4, anyway?

I'm tired of policemen playing soldier. If the assholes want that, let them join the military.

Judgment call. He was in a public parking garage, rambling incoherently, and talking about executing further police officers.

I think "public safety" was maybe 35% of it, with "officer safety" being the other 65%. Under the circumstances I can't blame them. The guy was a trained marksman with mental issues.

"Judgement call"?

That's just a cop-out. Twisted Evil

The man was holed up and not in a position to kill anyone else. The cops should have just waited him out. They are not supposed to execute people, no matter what. It wasn't a defensive move - it was retaliation. Not part of their job description.

We agree to disagree. It's true this is a troubling escalation of police use of lethal force, let's just leave it at that.
