Picked up this 1963 chestnut a couple weeks ago. I wondered why the DVD was dubbed from a really beat-up film or VHS of it, today I ran across the reason.
Because of an error in the copyright registration the film entered the public domain immediately upon its release. Therefore I suppose all existing DVDs of it must be in bootlegs.
It was written by Peter Stone, who two years later wrote one of my all-time favorite movies, "Mirage." Both movies share a Hitchcockian film noir suspense. The director of "Mirage" was the blacklisted Edward Dmytryk. Two cast members, George Kennedy and Walter Matthau, carry across.
"Charade" is a bit more of a comedy than "Mirage" but still very twisty-turny (which I like).
In between "Charade" and "Mirage" Stone wrote "Father Goose" -- I know I've seen it but don't remember anything about it. Will have to look into it (as the OB-GYN said).
