Here we have a movie that is too clever by about half. It's a jigsaw puzzle, with no scene longer than about one minute (the exact opposite of Birdman), and they're presented totally out of order -- not only chronologically, but different side stories to the main narrative. There are three main stories that intersect in one big event, and about a dozen main characters. As these little snippets are randomly presented, every minute or so you're thrust into a different movie, but eventually you start to see connections, to see how they fit together, and what the overall story is.
But it takes a long time, and it becomes a distraction frankly. A gimmick.
The central conceit of the story -- that a woman could fall in love with the transplant recipient of her husband's heart -- is a tough swallow too. If you don't buy that, the long tough slog in putting together the puzzle pieces feels a lot less satisfying.
Sophomore slump. His second film. Amores Perres has been described as "a perfect film" so I'm anxious to take it out for a spin.
