The design goes back to the late 1940s, when a bunch of ex-Manhattan Project scientists designed the first atomic-powered rocket. George Dyson wrote a great book about it, called "Project Orion" based on his father's work.

There are problems with the idea.

Not the least of which is getting several hundred small nuclear bombs into orbit safely.

The proposed design is not the same as Orion, which would indeed be infeasible.

Like I'd remember to collect at 92 years old! Perhaps a bet on whether the first flag on mars will be red with 5 stars....?

From what I read the new idea is to use fusion - Orion used fission. I have always been chastened that
H-bombs use Hiroshima type A-bombs as mere detonators...
