| I knew I could count on you.
Every television manufacturer has a bad reputation for reliability. My $5,000 Sony failed after a couple of months and required repair.

| Why do you want OLED? - Quote :
- In our side-by-side comparison reviews, OLED-based TVs are still the best we've ever tested, and all of them outperform the one QLED TV we've reviewed, Samsung's Q7, by a wide margin.
Maybe this is why.

| Why not? Well, there's LG's reliability problem. And all Panasonic and Sony OLED TVs are actually made by LG. OLED is still new enough that there may be a substantial price penalty (I haven't priced them recently). The new UHD televisions from Samsung are pretty frickin' gorgeous, and cheap ($650 for 60"), and reliable.
But I haven't A-B'ed for picture quality or price (since I'm not in the market, presently). Things could've changed. They often do in TV-land.
Let your eyes be the judge.
[Include curved TVs in your comparisons. I think you'll find them a worthy feature.) |

| OLED displays are quite different from the other LCD displays. The elements in the OLED screen produce their own light, rather than pass through the backlight as other LCD screens do. All reviews I have read say that the OLED picture is significantly better.
As for myself, I have an old Samsung which is just fine for me. The sounds sucks but the picture is fine for my old eyes and outdated glasses.
As for as the reliability problem you mention. How many people do you know who have had problems with an LG television? I read some of the complaints about LG on consumer reports. Scary. Then I read the complaints about Samsung - same, same.

| I know two or three people who had problems with LG TVs. OTOH my sister-in-law won one in a raffle and it's been problem-free.
I've owned a couple of Samsungs and never had a problem. Never heard of a problem with any friends of mine either. Of course "apocryphal evidence" is worthless, I'm going on media reports I've read that said LG were crap. They may be better now. |

| I don't know what media you refer to, but if it's the net, go get yourself a big bag of salt.
When I first started looking at LG, I googled "are LG TVs any good". I did not find anything to indicate that LG had and more problems than other manufacturers. I could drag out my old 32" CRT Sony. That's proven technology.

| Except, a lot of Sony TVs aren't made by Sony anymore. There were a major brand 20 years ago. Not so much anymore. |

| Compare:
- Samsung 55" curved screen 4K UHD = $600
- LG 55" flat screen OLED 4K HD = $1700
You'd have to decide if the picture quality is really worth $1100 to you. For me that'd be an easy decision. But for people who pay $2000 for a stick, who knows. |

| You have compared Samsung's bottom-of-the-barrel model with LG's top of the line model. Let's make it a bit more fair.
- Samsung QLED 55" curved screen 4K UHD = $2,299
- LG 55" flat screen OLED 4K HDR = $1,700
And just to fuck with me, Mother Nature has killed my espresso machine. Got up this morning and it didn't work. Low water level warning on, disabling everything, and the water level is not low. Believe it or not, it's probably a worn out magnet in the tank that signals the sensor. If I can't fix it, there's another $2K out the door. |

| The Samsung model I referenced sells for $2,299 at Best Buy and at Samsung. Amazon doesn't have that model, but has another with very similar specs for $2,500.
Your list is meaningless. You have different models - even refurbished sets.

| Okay, doesn't matter, "The quality will remain long after the price is forgotten" and "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten."
I haven't been shopping for TVs since, what was it, 2015? A lifetime in this industry. |

| The last couple of times I bought a TV (admittedly a few years ago now), I went to a store and looked at the ones running. My impression is that the technical specs don't really give you a good feel for which actually looks best. So you're better off standing in front of two sets showing the same program and deciding which you prefer by direct comparison. Old-fashioned, I admit. |

| Plus, stores selling TVs usually turn the contrast way up, and the saturation way up, to make them look more "vivid." First thing I do, when I bring one home, is tone down the colors so skin tones look like flesh instead of The Simpsons. |

| Actually, flesh tones are one of the points of comparison, so if they don't look realistic in the store, I'm not buying that TV. |

| Parameters that can be adjusted make poor comparison benchmarks. Stores have also been known to adjust cheaper TVs to look like crap next to their top of the line.
I look for things that cannot be adjusted: sharpness, ghosting, speed of refresh, uniformity of resolution.
The rest I can fix when I get home. Or, if the clerk is amenable, in the store. |

| After eight years of dedicated service, my 55" curved TV has suddenly developed some bright spots, two in the lower left and a bad one middle left: I think it's time to look at 65" OLED or QLED replacements. Amazone Prime days is July 11, with (supposedly) major discounts offered. |

| Checked all kinds of specs and reviews online, and there's no clear winner. I'll try to see some examples in person Friday at Video Only, then Amazon Prime Day is on Tuesday.
Chances are -- this is my recollection from the last time I shopped -- the differences are exceedingly minor. Price will dictate, whoever has a good deal. |

| Well, I looked at everything they had in two different stores, and ended up coming home with an OLED.
The picture is just a PINCH better than QLED, visible mostly in the blacks. When something is black, it's pitch black.
Plus, the store where I ended up buying was selling the OLEDs for $200 less than the same size QLED, and they priced it to match what Amazon Prime will be Tuesday (they said), and promised to match that price if it came in any lower.
So, hard not to.
Now, in the store, and out of the box, the setup is garish. Wayyy too much contrast, and way too saturated in the colors. I can understand why they do this in stores -- wow the rubes -- but once I got it home and tried to tone it back, the procedure for doing so was not obvious. Seems the factory WANTS you to be a rube.
However, five minutes on the phone with my friendly salesman alerted me to a hidden menu, and after a half hour of tinkering, I'm right where I want to be.
Wow. This picture is astonishing. You can not only see every hair on somebody's arm, you can see the dust on the hairs. |

| The new picture, even toned down a bit, takes some getting used to.
With total blackness in the shadows and black originals, the overall first impression is that the TV is too dark. But if you sit and watch it a minute, you realize the light stuff is normal lightness, and the bright stuff is really bright. It's just way more range, way more contrast than a person is used to from a TV.
The Mrs said it looks "more real."
I say it's more like a movie screen than a TV.
I also liken it to digital audio. In digital audio there is no "hiss." When it's off it's inky silence. When it comes on it can be deafeningly loud -- and it's impossible to tell how loud you've set the volume until the music starts. This can be disconcerting when you're changing sources of different levels, as I often do. I'm forever jolting myself out of my skin because I have the volume set too loud.
This is my first "digital TV." |
