In total honesty, when someone's 'hobby' is so consuming that the knowledge of the subject is on a par with a 'professional', and the equipment is no longer the same quality as the one's found at Toys-R-Us, the word 'amateur' doesn't apply.

One definition of amateur: "one who engages in a pursuit, study, science, or sport as a pastime rather than as a profession"

Being knowledgeable and competent and possessing good equipment doesn't revoke your amateur standing.
