This correspondent says it's a myth that underdogs win major competitions based on grit alone. But Mr. Berlatsky has some misinformation of his own—the University of Washington crew has rowed at world class level since well before 1936 and continues to do so today. They have what amounts to a dynasty in crew, winning national championships more often than not, men's and women's. Not now, never have been 'underdogs.' They eat Harvard for lunch.
My dad rowed crew there a couple years after 1936.
