In the Edward O. Wilson book I just skimmed, he listed all of the Artificial Intelligence movies he knew (don't ask -- the book went careening off-topic very early) and I owned copies of all of them but one. It's a 2014 movie starring Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman and Kate Mara, that somehow I'd never heard of before.
After buying a copy (for $2.99!) I think I know why. It has some cool special effects but the plot is confused and can't seem to find its direction. The movie is part Ex Machina, part Mad Max, part Shootout at the OK Corral. Depp plays an AI scientist who gets poisoned by anti-AI Luddites, but has just enough time to upload himself into the internet. From there he gets unlimited power, and starts using nanotechnology to fix everything that's wrong with the world.
But the R.I.F.T. (Revolutionary Independence From Technology) terrorist group doesn't want supermen or endless power or a clean environment. They want man to worship god and be mortal.
Yeah. It's a garbled mess. The reviewers agreed.
