This is a New York Times magazine article. It's long and depressing, so I'm using the bookmark to the epilogue, which is perhaps short enough to read.

Sixty years ago the phenomenon of global climate change was first identified
, and
thirty years ago the human causes of it
were understood enough to enumerate.
However,
it was thought at the time that the earth was COOLING, not warming.
If we had undertaken any of the steps proposed in the 1970s we probably would have made things WORSE today.

The decade referred to in the article is 1979-89. And the cooling thing was always a minority position among scientists.
