OK, so he wasn't in the same class as Leonard and Pohl, but he produced some very popular stuff. I didn't read much of it, but I remember Patriot Games. The first part of the book, about the assassination attempt, is brilliantly well done. I was really quite disappointed with the later two-thirds of the book, which seemed very pedestrian. But he had talent, there's no doubt. Techno-thriller author and gaming franchise Tom Clancy dies at 66

Never read anything of his. He always seemed, well, a bit "grocery store" for my tastes.

Tom Clancy wrote books that made entertaining movies, but I found them to be very ponderous reading.
