I hate to kill any living critter, but especially intelligent ones and I've come to a new respect for crows over the past few years. They can pass the mirror test, they recognize individuals, they remember danger and avoid similar situations.
So I was surprised to see a crow in the road today. They're usually smart enough to avoid traffic, even watching streetlights and leaving the crosswalk when the light turns green. This crow was standing in my lane, and it looked like he might have a broken wing or something because he was holding it out at an odd angle. I swerved to avoid hitting him, but as I passed he fluttered up under my car. I saw in my rear view mirror that he lay in the road.
Bothered me.
Until it occurred to me it might have been suicide, knowing he could not survive long with a broken wing.
