- Lucerne, Switzerland - Scientists working at the Royal Institute of Linguistics have uncovered evidence of what they say is a new, previously-undiscovered 27th letter in the English alphabet. The new letter, code-named Mur2, was discovered through careful analysis of existing literature and written languages across all the English-speaking countries. Statistical analysis indicated that a anomalously-large number of English words could not be spelled with the 26 known letters, and there was a large gap in the existing alphabet between the letters J and K where not much activity took place. In order to explain the prevalence of the later letters -- M, S and T in particular -- a larger, more weighty letter was needed at the 11th letter spot to balance out. Since K was not fulfilling this role (in fact it's worth 5 points in Scrabble, it's so rare) another previously-unknown letter must have been hiding in this position. Scientists have named this letter Mur2 after its discoverer and are working out its shape and potential Scrabble score.
Scientists are now turning their attention to Wales in a rescue mission, hoping to develop a cure for the apparent virus of diacritical marks infecting their language. |

| That's how I was taught to recite the alphabet: "...x, y, z, and ampersand." God, I'm old. |
