| I felt like slumming last night so I watched a recent Tom Cruise movie, "Jack Reacher." OMG the plot was a warm mess. Supposedly this big corporation has the owner of a construction company killed so they can take over municipal contracts. Except killing the owner hardly makes a business takeover easier. And this shadowy corporation supposedly moves every couple of years to avoid getting caught, yet everybody knows who they are. And they get public contracts. And the killers they hire are well-known sharp-shooters. Jesus, the more you pick at it the faster the plot disintegrates.
Just an excuse for rifle play in the rain and a tepid non-romance. Plot is secondary. Or tertiary. |

| The Jack Reacher novels are junk food for the mind. I admit to having snacked on a few of them. Yes, the plots are convoluted and a little far fetched. But not as far fetched as Tom Cruise playing the part of a 6'5" 250-pound ex-military policeman.

Ha! Yeah, there was a scene with Cruise walking through a crowd of onlookers and towering above them and I asked myself, isn't he, like, 5'6" in real life? |

| Cruise is almost reaching Woody Allen territory, where he plays a romantic lead in movies he himself produces, long after casting him for such is believable. |

Yeah, that was my issue. Reacher was so not a Tom Cruise-type. I'd have bought even Bruce Willis but Cruise? No way, no day. Really I think it needed somebody big and rough looking like Iron Man 2's Mickey Rourke. Or even Stallone. Cruise is just such a pussy. Oh, and Reacher's blond with light eyes. Not dark like Cruise. |

| As someone who has never heard of Jack Reacher before I was not bothered by the casting. Although he *did* try to come across as some sort of badass when he just seemed cute and cuddly. Dwayne Johnson 'The Rock' would have been better. |

| The public deserves better than attempting to foist Tom Cruise on us as a believable "action hero." Risky Business was a funny movie, and the last decent flick the jerk was in.

| I thought of Johnson but he's a little young for the Reacher character. Among other things. But he'd have at least been more believable than Cruise.
Top Gun. I loved Top Gun. It got me into planes and I came very close to being Air Force like my cousin. When my eyes wouldn't pass the test (they didn't offer laser surgery for recruits in those days) I went towards a commercial license. I paid for the flight school by working as an escort, lol. I went as long as I could, but it was expensive. I couldn't finish (the cops were steadily cracking down on the services in town) but I would go back to flight school in a heartbeat if I ever had the money. I have one first cousin who's Air Force and went commercial later and one who's an aircraft mechanic so it must be in the genes, lol. I love all planes. From the incredible F-14 to a little twin engine Cessna, they all have their charms. Each one is a different experience. But in my little world of Barbies and Lisa Frank the idea that I could do such things didn't really penetrate till Top Gun. When Top Gun came out that was like porn for me, I couldn't get enough of the planes. It gave me a plan. Not a plan that panned out, mind you, but at that age-someone like me, a plan was good enough to keep me out of trouble. I love that in the years since I've seen younger and younger kids do the flight thing. And the sailing thing. I don't do the sailing thing. I swim very well, but I avoid the open ocean. She's a bitch. But anyway. I think Cruise just doesn't realize that his natural audience is 11 year old girls. |

Still? Maybe 30 years ago. Or, like Woody, maybe not! |
