To a large degree (as I understand it anyway), this same discussion is what led to the Continental Congress of 1789 and the drafting of the Constitution, because the Articles of Confederation from 1776 created a more pure democracy -- where everything had to be voted on by everybody, resulting in gridlock. It was evident that representational democracy was better suited, that voting for representatives with set term limits, and allowing them the freedom to run the country for the duration of their term, worked better than throwing literally everything up for a public vote.
Perhaps, though, with the advent of instant polling through the Internet, now public democracy would be more possible.
But would it be wise? Would Joebob and Tamifaye Sixpack be able to vote on military appropriations and agricultural subsidies in a manner that served the common good?
Not to put too fine a point on it, is the Trump Experiment illustrative?
