It strikes me, listening to a group of Trump supporters on NPR this morning, that some large percentage of Trump's support comes from people who misunderstand the role of Islam in the mass shootings in the US and the world, which Trump is exploiting to drum up support.
In many ways this parallels George W. Bush's misuse of Iraq as the force behind the 9/11 attacks to drum up support for his invasion. It's the politics of fear, of creating an enemy to focus on. It is George Orwell's "Two-Minutes Hate."
The subtleties of who-caused-what are lost on these people. They see bad things happening and they want to blame somebody -- somebody who looks different from them. This week it's Muslims, last week it was Jews, next week it might be blacks or homosexuals.
