Stand and fight with the NRA:
I saw a new Lapierre commercial just today that said Muslims were "monsters" and the only way to avoid further mass shootings is for loyal NRA members to start shooting the monsters before they can attack a school or church or home.
It's getting ugly out there.
Trump tonight called for no Muslims to be allowed into the country, even if they're US citizens just on vacation overseas. I think he wants a religion test at the airports.
Sieg Heil!

How long do you think before Trump's supporters start shouting "Sieg heil"?

Trump's unfettered ego, and his extremely limited understanding of the world, lead me to believe that he will allow his mouth to get him in enough trouble before the convention that he will eventually have to withdraw from the race. The boob just loves the sound of his own voice, and doesn't stop to think before opening his big fat mouth.

I read an article today that argued that Trump isn't actually leading anything. What he is actually doing is recognizing an audience and playing to it, saying what they want to hear. That is an interesting and plausible point of view. It is also disturbing in a couple of ways.
First, many Americans don't want to believe that there is a sizeable minority of Americans who are deeply racist, misogynistic, and xenophobic, to the point that they are willing to vote against their own best interests in an effort to put down the people they don't like. Of course, quite a few people know that that does indeed describe a noticeable proportion of the Republican "base". And they are the ones putting Trump at the top of the polls, because he is reflecting their angst.
Second, it doesn't matter what he says. It doesn't matter that he lies all the time, and he can't say anything "too racist" or "too fascist" for these people, because that really is how they feel, and they like him for saying what they feel. His support may not get much bigger than it is now, but what is there isn't going away.
Will that win him the nomination? I don't know. But I don't see him dropping out until he's forced out. And he may continue to run as an independent if that happens.

Rachel Maddow, on her show Monday and again as an invited guest on Lawrence O'Donnel's show last night, puts forward a different theory.
She thinks Trump has started to realize he might actually get the Republican nomination, and that could potentially lead to a general election victory. And this terrifies him.
He is trying to torpedo his own campaign, because he doesn't really want the job of president. He only wanted to advertise the Trump brand and make a bunch of noise.
However his ego prevents him from simply pulling out of the race. He'd have to admit his campaign was all a sham, that it was all theater.
Instead, he's trying to get himself "fired" from the Republican Party. He's trying to push himself off the cliff of "too extreme to be elected" and thus save face and still maintain the Trump brand.
It is backfiring on him though, as the more extreme he gets, the higher his poll numbers. Left with no other options, he keeps doubling down, hoping the RNC will eventually call his bluff and he can leave the table.
Apparently Trump yesterday called for the registering of all Muslims in America. His next move will be to suggest painting a big "M" on the window of all Muslim-owned businesses.

He's succeeding at making himself disliked in some quarters.
The National Rifle Association is in turmoil amid allegations that Oliver North, recently installed as the gun lobbying organization’s president, threatened to release damaging information about longtime CEO and Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre unless he agreed to resign.
In a letter to the NRA board of executives on Thursday, obtained by The Wall Street Journal, LaPierre accused North of extorting him and pressuring him to resign over alleged financial improprieties.
“The extortion was simple: resign or there will be destructive allegations made against me and the NRA,” LaPierre wrote. “Alarmed and disgusted, I refused the offer.”
