| Scientists were disappointed that no water was found. Apparently, they speculate, this will make it SOMEWHAT less likely that their probes and landers will discover intelligent life living on the thing. They still want to spend ten years and $100 billion looking, just in case the little green fellows are hiding in craters Will also make it somewhat harder to sell oceanfront real estate for summer homes. Don't tell BP however; I'm sure they're already preparing a deep well drilling rig to explore for oil. |

| Okay. I know what a tuber is, but I think you may be using it to mean something else. Hints?

It's an Eddie Izzard bit from Dress to Kill, I think, he's talking about the British space program and how they had a man on a ladder and they had him on a tuber (like a radio). I was more or less making fun of British Petroleum for being outdated. I'll try to find the bit, it's wonderful. |

The comet is 310 million miles away. The sun is 93 million miles away, and sunlight takes eight minutes to reach Earth. Therefore signals from 67P must take at least 25 minutes to reach us -- meaning any control signals sent would have to take an hour round trip. The lander descended on its own, without human control, in a free fall without any thrusters. It bounced when it hit the comet. The harpoons that were supposed to anchor it apparently malfunctioned. We'll know more today if the lander sends out the pictures it is scheduled to take. There were no pictures of the landing because it was a blind operation. |
