That is a really nonsensical remark.

Yeah I loved the twisty illogic of it, that's why I posted it.

"If there were no god everybody would be an atheist" is how you first read it, but on second read it says "Because there are atheists there must be a god." Which is nonsensical on a whole different level!

"If there were no Jews there'd be no anti-semites" is a variant which makes sense.

"If there was no Loch Ness Monster there would be no Nessie skeptics" is closer to the real illogic of it.

But another inference can also derived, "If there were no God, there would be theists."

He does not say or suggest 'everybody'.... nor does he say or suggest they would be atheists. He says there would be no atheists if a God in fact does not exist. Ergo, there would be no need for people to proclaim they do not believe in a God if in fact they were correct. Everyone who would proclaim otherwise have no requirement to proclaim, as it would be clearly self evident. I need not claim I am an a-flying spaghetti monster-ist. It is self evident there isn't such a thing.

You mean, "If there was no god there'd be no people"?

As I see it, this is just another example of the simplistic, illogical, circular reasoning of theists. I read the quote as stating that the existence of atheists is proof of the existence of god. That's the type of Sarah Palin reasoning these people cling to.

Had he said, "If there were no theists, there would be no Atheists." he would have made more sense, but the logic would still fail. If there were no theists, then everyone would be an atheist. It isn't necessary for one to proclaim his position - or even recognize it - in order for the term to apply. If the concept of gods had never occurred to anyone on the human species, ever, then everyone would be atheists.

Now don't say you can't swear off drinking; it's easy. I've done it a thousand times.

How well I remember my first encounter with The Devil's Brew. I happened to stumble across a case of bourbon--and went right on stumbling for several days thereafter.

Back in my rummy days, I would tremble and shake for hours upon arising. It was the only exercise I got.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house unless they have a well-stocked bar.

Somebody's been putting pineapple juice in my pineapple juice!

Water? Never touch the stuff. Fish fuck in it.

My favorite line attributed to W.C. Fields:
“A woman drove me to drink and I didn’t even have the decency to thank her.”

Elizabeth Warren wrote:
This crisis didn't have to happen. America had a boom-and-bust cycle from the 1790s to the 1930s, with a financial panic every ten to fifteen years. But we figured out how to fix it. Coming out of the Great Depression, the country put tough rules in place that gave us fifty years without a financial crisis. But in the 1980s, we started pulling the threads out of the regulatory fabric, and we found ourselves back in the boom-and-bust cycle. When this crisis is over, there will be a once-in-a-generation chance to rewrite the rules. What we set in place will determine whether our country continues down this path toward a boom-and-bust economy or whether we reestablish an economy with more stability that gives ordinary folks a chance at real prosperity.
