Singing -- unlike almost any other musical instrument -- can be done poorly and people still like it. It requires no talent or practice, if you have "a hook."

Porgy & Bess is an opera, albeit a "popular opera" and most opera doesn't speak to most people. It's all about technique -- instead of "selling" a song.
