Gad, I had a long and beautiful coherent dream last night. I wish I could remember all of it.

I was visiting the Moon, as a visiting researcher. Somehow, we had created an atmosphere up there, so you could breathe outside. The sky was a milky pink color, with wispy clouds. The Earth sat in the sky, and it was YUGE!

Gravity was reduced so walking was a weird sensation. Kids who grew up there tended to be several inches taller than Earth adults. The women were tall and slender.

We stayed in the only hotel, and it was a "company hotel" where you ate your meals there, did your shopping there, got your mail there, asked any questions you had. I asked about email and was told most services were available, although "Microsoft Bing is not supported, again, for the time being." Got the impression it was a licensing issue.

On the grounds of the hotel there was a big pool, almost a lake. I didn't expect to see any life in it but I saw what appeared to be bones.

Jeff Daniels rode up on a horse, carrying a flute. He asked me about my research, and implied I should not be researching into the history of the Moon. He started poking at me with his flute. I tried to grab it, and pull it away from him, but he was stronger than me.

There was much much more but it's slipping away as I write.

My dreams have no sense of time or era.

Last night my Grandma was taking us out for Dominos Pizza in her 1956 Chevy. But she couldn't find the Dominos.

I told her, hang on, I'll look it up on Google Maps on my phone.

She died in 1984.

Ugh. Last night I was investigating a vegan nursing home for myself. The staff were very nice, but every resident I met complained about the food.

The art on the walls was owned by management and you weren't allowed to change it.

Once a month everybody got on a shuttle van to go out to dinner, which was free to the residents, but it was always the same restaurant and everyone hated it.

It was the last day of high school. Everyone was assembling at the bus stop, and complaining about the last assignment -- we had to write a 500 word essay on what we expected to do with the rest of our lives. One girl said she spent THREE DAYS laboring over the essay, and everyone else said it was really hard because they had no idea what their lives would hold.

Me, I somehow missed that this would be a requirement.

Oh well, I thought, at least my essay would be pretty easy to write. I can whip out 500 words on the bus and have it ready by the time we land.

For me the essay would be easy, because I'm retired now. My days consist of reading, going to movies, doing projects on the computer, sleeping.... Not very exciting, but easy to write about.

This will be a breeze, I thought.

Last night I was attending an event downtown, I pulled into a public parking garage across the street from the event and was surprised to find it almost empty.  The garage was on a steep hill -- as many in Seattle are -- so I was on level G.

As we were exiting the garage, heading for the people door, my companion noticed a small inconspicuous sign that said the garage hours were 6:00am to 8:00pm "with no after hours access."  Since our event would run beyond eight PM we realized we had to find new parking.  No wonder the garage was almost empty!

So we walked back up to my car and began exiting the garage.  Down, down, down we went until we reached Level C, where there was a gate for "prepaid tickets only."  A small inconspicuous sign 100 feet before the gate said, "prepaid tickets only, cashier is on Level A."

So we continued three more circumnavigations of the empty parking garage until we came to Level A.

On level A there was an attendant booth, but it was empty.  A sign in the window said, "Attendant not on duty.  Pre-pay your ticket on Level G."

Grrr.  We drove six circumnavigations of the garage back up to G, paid $4 at a machine for the priviledge of seeing the empty garage, then wound our way back down to C and exited.

Found street parking at the event ($eight) and made it just in time.

I WISH this had been a dream.  It really happened.

A friend of mine added a new "water feature" to his garden except this one was not water, it was a planter box full of fresh bubbling lava.  It was very nice, looked great at night -- but I questioned him about its safety. To test it I spit on it, and yup, my spit immediately vanished in a puff of steam. Pity the poor bird or squirrel that came too close.

For the past three nights I've had the same kind of dream over and over, although the details vary each time.

I'm watching a movie, or a TV show, or a commercial, and suddenly the scene shifts to a "fan version" which is greatly expanded from the original -- using the original cast and scenery, but elaborating on the plot greatly. Sometimes I'm just watching the action, sometimes I'm in the middle of it unwittingly.

A one minute commercial becomes a 10-minute mini-drama. A walk out to my mailbox to pick up mail becomes an elaborate story about the mailman's life. A scene in a movie suddenly becomes a movie in itself.

Nothing proceeds according to predictable pacing.

The subconscious is like a river, or many streams actually, continually flowing just below the surface of the conscious. Sometimes, while sitting quietly or waiting to fall asleep, I can dip into it (or more accurately, it spills over into consciousness) and I get rushes of wordplay, pictures, images, odd names and seemingly random words. I'm convinced this is where Robin Williams' comedy came from, I'm convinced this is where composers' songs and writers' stories come from.

If you dip into the well you can harness madness.

If you can control the underground flow, filter it through your consciousness and make sense of it, you can be a creative person.

Unfortunately I cannot control it. I see fleeting wisps of the flow of words and images, but they make no sense and evaporate as soon as I bring them to the surface.

Last night I was working in a warehouse -- my first full time job, and a frequent dream subject -- but instead of the warehouse shelves being stocked with goods on wooden pallets, in my dream everything was on metal racks. I tried to lift one of the metal racks with my forklift and found everything was welded or bolted together. Nothing came apart.

"What kind of warehouse," I thought to myself, "has all the contents locked away where you cannot move anything, or get anything out?"

None of my dreams recently have been very coherent or memorable, but this morning I dreamed I was life guarding at the pool and they told me to bring my aluminum extension ladder -- in case somebody drowned in the deep end.

The Fire Department was holding a fund raising event at the local Olive Garden Italian restaurant. Two or three or four firefighters would ascend way up in the air on jets of water, and perform these elaborate "water ballet" moves sixty feet up, supported only by a stream of water they controlled with a harness they were wearing. This was performed to Italian music, with running commentary by the fire chief. Each ballet had an elaborate Italian name.

I remember being amazed that the fire chief spoke such good Italian.

Boy, they sure show a lot of penises on TV these days.

In my dream this morning, some poor schlub accidentally superglued his penis to his belly, facing left. Much hilarity ensued. He was shown trying to pee, his girlfriend was trying to comfort him and he warned her not to touch it because it would be painful to get an erection, and his friends all were getting attention to THEIR penises while he had to sit out.

"Ah," I remember thinking, "this is what post-Trump TV has sunk to."

Lots of elaborate nonsensical dreams that evaporate as soon as I wake, but this morning the tail end of one raised an interesting question.

Dreamed I was visiting some friends on their farm, and they had a tame cougar or leopard (big cat of some kind).  This cat had just had kittens so there were about eight of these adorable kittens wandering about.  We had a lot of fun playing with them.

Then everybody moved out to the yard.  The mother put up with this for a while, her kittens running around and tumbling together in the grass, then she got nervous.  She started gathering them up, two or three at a time in her mouth, and carrying them back inside.  She must have been nervous about hawks or something.

So we picked up the three we were playing with and brought them in too.

Which raises the question: can a mama cat count to eight?

We were in Las Vegas for some reason or other, and an announcement came over the casino PA that Donald Trump would be speaking in a half hour. We thought, "Why not?" and bought tickets, and filed into an auditorium with a couple hundred other people.

After an hour or so, they announced that Mr. Trump had arranged for us all to have a gift, and a curtain was pulled back to reveal pallets of pre-packaged snacks: water bottles, Gatorade, those tins of shortbread cookies, Top Ramen, potato chips. Nobody was particularly interested, although a few larger people waddled over and grabbed some cookies.

45 minutes later he STILL hadn't shown up, and the crowd was getting antsy. Many were drifting out, back to the slot machines.

Fanfare music started playing over the PA, and a curtain opened to reveal a tall figure coming out. As he stepped into the light however, it was not Donald -- just a body double. This happened 4-5 times, and eventually we began ignoring this ploy too.

Somebody told me that a music group, one of my favorite bands, was prepared to play to keep the crowd entertained while we waited for Donald. I ran around setting up microphones and amplifiers, getting ready for their arrival -- only to be told, a half hour later, that they were stuck in some airport and couldn't make it. I arranged for a video feed and a large screen TV so they could play remotely, but when they came on-screen that all had big blood blisters on their faces, and splotches, and they looked terrible. They tried to sing a song but they couldn't remember the words or hold a tune. I was embarrassed for them.

Donald never did show.

My new office was on the 23rd floor of a downtown skyscraper; we were excited to see our new digs.

But we discovered one small design error -- they forgot to put a door into our new office! The only way to reach it was to go into a neighboring office, open a window, climb out onto the ledge, and shimmy across the ledge to the windows on our new offices. Several people in my office did this, and sat down to begin work in the new space but I was uncomfortable with the idea, being afraid of heights. I was SURE there must be some building code violation involved, and we ought to at least complain to the contractor and have him put in the door he missed.

Been dreaming a lot lately where my dead parents and sister are characters in my dreams.

I wonder if that's the origin of ghost legends?

Last night I had to get across downtown on foot, as I do in almost all my dreams, but this time I had my wife's dog and a small child (a nephew or something) with me. We made it all the way to the brick apartment building which was our goal, after a couple hours of intense struggle (through a railroad yard, through a construction site that looked like something out of Breughel, past miles of ruins, etc.) The apartment we needed was up high, on the 5th or 6th floor and there was no elevator.

But there was an outside concrete stairway, and a big tree that had grown in and around the stairway. We started climbing the stairs, which turned into climbing the tree. I needed both hands to help the dog and child up the tree, so I had to drop the two frying pans I was carrying(?) Once we reached the door, I realized we'd NEED those frying pans, so I said "Stay here" and started scurrying down the tree again to retrieve the pans. Of course the dog and baby did not stay, they came barrelling down after me and scattered. I retrieved the pans from the bushes, and now contemplated the task of finding the dog and baby again.

Do these dreams MEAN anything?

I forget the name for them, but dreams like this are a reflection of stress you are feeling about something you are about to do. I had some memorable dreams of this type in the weeks before I started college. For a guess, you are planning something like moving house, and your subconscious is worried about it.

We were driving down Highway 99 (a main arterial) in this canary yellow 1965 Cadillac somebody rented for us.  It's a piece of shit. None of the knobs work on the dash. The hood keeps popping up, obscuring my view.  I keep pressing down on the brake as hard as I can but I'm unable to slow down from the steady 40 mph the thing wants to go.  We see "police activity" ahead of us -- four officers out of their car, chasing a suspect on foot -- but I cannot stop the Caddy.  We go whizzing by, just barely missing the policemen.

I say, "enough of this shit, this is UNSAFE" so I pull into the first parking space, shift out of gear, jam the hand brake down, put it in park.  I can't see out the front because the hood has popped up again, but when I look up the open the door I see that we're moving again, gaining speed.

I suspect this dream is a parable about getting old...

You see, we had a dilemma. We'd been hired to modify the hospital's fetal heart monitors, to try to make them sensitive enough to pick up a heartbeat at only six weeks. At that age, with the egg not even implanted yet, it's almost impossible to pick up a tiny little heartbeat in the roar of all the other processes going on inside the woman, not even knowing for sure where the egg is floating.

Plus, the equipment we were told to modify was Soviet-era Cuban heart monitors, they looked like guitar amplifiers with 1957 Chevy fins on them. For some reason it was important to maintain the 1957 fins on them.

Took a sleeping pill last night, and slept from 6:45pm to 4:30am when my alarm went off. Felt like about 20 minutes.

Just before I woke up, I was riding the bus to the University of Washington, carrying a heating pad (which was warm), and wearing just a red Speedo. I'd just had a stirring conversation with a 3-year old girl about the tiny white worms floating in the mud puddle I was laying in.

Drugs are a wonderful thing.
