Now and then a line or two in a song just grabs me. I don't know why, but some lines just stay with me. I doubt that I am alone in this. So, what lyrics have stuck with you?

For me, the best lines I ever heard were a simple bit from Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London":
Quote :
I saw a werewolf drinkin' a pina colada at Trader Vic's
And his hair was perfect

The second line, for some reason, just tears me up.

And for you fans of alliteration, there's another line in the song:
Quote :
Little old lady got mutilated late last night

"All I wanna do", pretty much the whole thing is amazingly real to me. The song isn't that great, as a song, it never really catches fire. But the words capture that feeling of being drunk in the local hangout with all the other losers. Been there, done that.

Some favorites of mine.
  • "It doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you" - Neil Young, Old Man
  • "Coyote's in the coffee shop staring a hole in his scrambled eggs, he picks up my scent on his fingers while he's watching the waitresses' legs" - Joni Mitchell, Coyote
  • "Just before our love got lost you said "I am as constant as a northern star" and I said "Constant in the darkness where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar" - Joni Mitchell, A Case of You
  • "I have minded my P's and Q's, tried not to damage any W's, and if I tread upon a B I'll pick it up and tell it earnestly "I'm sorry!" which of course I am" - Hatfield and the North, Mumps
  • "In the end, choosing notes to see if they make friends, a D-sharp minor flattened 5th will go to C, dotted crotchets usually divide by three, we don't really know now exactly what we mean, still we had the gist of it till the chords changed..." - Hatfield and the North, Licks for the Ladies
  • "Oh it's so funny to be seeing you after so long, girl. And with the way you look I understand that you are not impressed, but I heard you let that little friend of mine take off your party dress. I'm not going to get too sentimental like those other sticky valentines, 'cause I don't know if you've been loving somebody, I only know it isn't mine. Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking when I hear the silly things that you say, I think somebody better put out the big light, cause I can't stand to see you this way." - Elvis Costello, Alison
  • "A connecting principle, linked to the invisible almost imperceptible, something inexpressible, science insusceptible, logic so inflexible causally connectible yet nothing is invincible" - The Police, Synchronicity
  • "No one likes us, I don't know why, we may not be perfect but heaven knows we try. All around even our old friends put us down, let's drop the big one and see what happens. We give them money but are they grateful? No, they're spiteful and they're hateful. They don't respect us so let's surprise them, we'll drop the big one and pulverize them. Asia's too crowded and Europe's too old, Africa is far too hot and Canada's too cold, and South America stole our name so let's drop the big one (there'll be no one left to blame us). Boom goes London and boom Paree, more room for you and more room for me. Every city the whole world round will just be another American town. Oh, how peaceful it will be, we'll set everybody free" - Randy Newman, Political Science
  • "Sometimes you really dig a girl the moment you kiss her, and then you get distracted by her older sister. In walks her father and takes you aside, and says "Better go home, son, and make up your mind" - Lovin' Spoonful, Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind
  • "Well I haven't seen you now since many is the short year, and the last time I seen you you said you'd joined the Church of Jesus. But me, I remember your long red hair falling in our faces as I kissed you. And you're probably married now, house and car and all, and you turned into a grownup female stranger. And if I was lying near you now, I probably wouldn't be here at all. We parted so hard; me, rushing round Britain with a guitar, making love to people that I didn't even like to see. I never slept with you though we must have made love a thousand times. For we were just young, didn't have no place to go, but in the wide hills and beside many a long water. You have gathered flowers, and they do not smell for me." - Incredible String Band, First Girl I Loved

What in the hell is a 'crotchet'?

It totally messed me up.

Obviously too obscure.
It remains unsettling.

Oh lord, there are so many for so many different reasons!
Kesha's Gold Trans Am:
Twenty bucks and a,
Switch blade knife.
American metal,
With a devil inside!

Mostly sums up my teeneagedom in South Jackson in a world where I had Marlboro's rolled up in my sleeve and wrangled free drinks because I could recite the bit on the Budweiser label. I ran the table with my own cue and struck my matches off my Dingos.
I was so young and stupid, lol. But I could drink any motherfucker in there under the table!

Sometimes they stick in my head, not an ear worm, just evocative for an unknown reason- like Lord's Royals-
But every song's like:
Gold teeth
Grey Goose
Tripping in the bathroom
Bloodstains
Ball gowns
Trashing the hotel room

Kesha has a song, Mr Watson. about a dude in khakis she wants to fuck. Ben is of course Mr Watson and his work uniform has always been some version of khakis. So every bit of that song is likely to run wild in my head at any time of the day or night.
"Mr. Watson I want to get with you
I won't tell a soul what we're gonna do
Wanna get my hands in your Khaki pants"

We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams

I found myself humming this as I was wandering the aisles of Harbor Freight looking for a welding helmet that did not have goofy blue flames on it. It's meaningful to me but I can't articulate why. I sense it's blue collar pride, but I'd never admit to such a thing.

And then there's ones from deep within my memories that will never fade:
She handed me a heart shaped locket that said
"To thine own self be true"
And I shivered as I watched a roach crawl across
The toe of my high heeled shoe

That one surfaces at odd moments.

"If I go crazy then will you still call me Superman. If I'm alive and well will you still be there a-holdin' my hand?"

"What's love got to do with it?"

"Hey kids, rock on"

"Blond boys don't lie"

"Respectfully, I say to thee I'm aware that you're cheatin but no one makes me feel like you do."

"Let's do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight."

They run through my head like wildfire. My life has a soundtrack, they play on my mood, they affect my mood, and my mood affects them- what my head throws at me. That sensation that the radio is playing just what applied to you at the moment? Yeah, that. Except all the time.

I love it and I hate it. It means the music is important to me. It's how I bond with and explore my world. It's a bridge between me and everyone else. But it's also what confines me. If I can't connect with you through music I may not be able to connect with you. I want to express myself through music and can't really. I sing well but I freak out on stage. I play well, but I can't read music.

Damn I love Harbor Freight.

Even though most of the stuff is shit and will break if you use it 'hard'.

I know you probably don't have even 10 minutes strung together very often where you can do what you want to do... like practicing singing and playing your music.  Do kareoke for the family.  As a threat.
When you get famous, can I dance in the backround?  I'm awesome.

Yeah, we only get certain things there. Occasionally they surprise.
