Movie: Fatherhood Empty
PostSubject: Movie: Fatherhood   Movie: Fatherhood EmptySat Jun 19, 2021 7:32 pm

For Juneteenth (today) and Father's Day (tomorrow), a movie about the compromises we make, and the meanings we find in them.  Kevin Hart plays a husband whose wife dies suddenly after a C-section, and he's totally at sea about how to be a dad -- alone, with no time to grieve his wife -- and how to be a father, since he didn't have one growing up.

The movie brought back a lot of those "new baby " memories for me.  Those first couple of years I felt totally overwhelmed by my new responsibility too.  You always wonder if you did enough, if you provided enough love & support.

Of course luckily I was not alone.  I don't know if I could've done it on my own.

Kevin Hart does a really good piece of acting, being vulnerable and sad and not at all funny.  The weight on him is palpable, and you engage with his plight.

The little girl who plays his daughter (after she's about 4), Melody Hurd, is dynamite.

Paul Reiser plays Kevin's boss, and like his role in "The Kominsky Method," he's unrecognizable until he speaks.  But he looks totally different from that character.  Now I don't know what he looks like in real life.

It was a little sappy / Hallmarky, but for Father's Day I think we can allow.
