Deliveries are down, so the PO is hoovering money.  If Congress decides not to fund them before September, we could see the privatization of mail delivery.

If that happens:

  1. Fourth-class junk mail will get priority delivery
  2. Bills and letters and packages will be delivered "as staff is available," maybe weekly in most areas
  3. Some areas of the country, with low volumes, will lose service altogether
  4. Accuracy of delivery will plummet, as reputation takes a back seat to profit
  5. Cost of a stamp will be measured in dollars instead of cents
  6. Services like return receipt and signature required will either become hugely expensive or disappear altogether

And if Congress allows the P.O. to go out of business in September, in November only the ballots marked "Republican" will be delivered to the election offices.
