The first production from the Obamas' new production company, Higher Ground, is a long (1:49:00), incessantly-neutral look at a Chinese-owned windshield plant in Dayton OH. The Chinese owner & managers are puzzled by American workers who expect 8-hour shifts, 40-hour weeks, safety protections and a place at the table when hiring and firing decisions are made. The Chinese routinely work 12-hour days 6 or 7 days a week without safety or job security.
The owner threatens to close the plant if it goes union.
The union vote is 440 for, 868 against.
Rather than address the issues that caused the union organization effort, the company holds a contest where the ten highest-producing employees will be given tours of Shanghai.
