Writers often maintain that because they are the authors, they can reuse their work as they please; it couldn't be defined as "plagiarism" since they are not taking any words or ideas from someone else. However, while the debate on whether self-plagiarism is possible continues, the ethics of self-plagiarism is significant, especially because self-plagiarism can infringe upon a publisher’s copyright.

In 1994 John Fogerty was sued for self-plagiarism after leaving Fantasy Records and pursuing a solo career with Warner Bros. Records. Fantasy still owned the rights to the Creedence Clearwater Revival library. Saul Zaentz, the owner of Fantasy, claimed Fogerty's song "The Old Man Down the Road" was a musical copy of the Creedence song "Run Through the Jungle." A jury found that "Old Man" was not derivative.[38] See Fogerty v. Fantasy.

Self-plagiarism is possible if a 2nd or 3rd party is involved in the original creation or publishing of the original work.

Well certainly if a publisher holds the rights to something you've written or recorded.

But it still seems odd, that the originator of a song can't play it in public without paying performance royalties to the copyright holder. I wonder if most artists are told this, when they're offered the boondoggle of cash up front for the exclusive license to their back catalog?

That's the sacrifice they make for making the pact with the devil - for exposure to a wider audience.
