If the middle class doesn't matter anymore -- or soon won't, in the Republican-controlled post-democracy -- it's because their policies have been directly targeted at eliminating the Middle Class.

I think he's talking about the political middle, not the middle class.
Of course, today the political middle is what used to be called the right. What used to be called the middle is now called socialism.
