| My wife brought home a few DVDs last week, among them "Black Panther". I'm sure that we will stuff it in the DVD player sometime, but neither of us seems to be in a hurry. As it is a Marvel comic film, I doubt that it will be any good, but it is sure making money: - wikiwhatsit wrote:

Has anyone seen this? It got 97% on the TOMATOMETER. |

| Well, there's two hours of my life I'll never get back.
Complete waste of time.

In the words of the immortal Jeff Foxworthy, “There’s your sign.” |

| So he's the guy who came up with "You Might Be a Redneck If…"? I've heard that phrase many, many times for hilarious jokes, but I can't recall every seeing Foxworthy.
But with my memory (or what's left of it) that doesn't mean I haven't seen him.

| I loved it. It was all I could do to not go around doing the Wakanda Forever thing to everybody I met, lol. (Being white I figured that was probably in bad taste.) I loved the women warriors. I loved the idea of that's what black society would look like without white colonial intervention. And I thought Killmonger was probably the most reasonable villain I'd ever seen. I was half ass rooting for him. It was still way to white a movie, but I enjoyed it. Saw Deadpool 2 as well. (Friends blessed me with a free ticket, first movie I've seen in theaters in quite a while.) |

| Wife decided she wanted to rent it tonight on PPV.
Sorry Jenni, I found it profoundly distasteful. Africans have been systematically suppressed by Caucasian civilizations for hundreds of years, and what makes them feel better? Sci-fi where they have UFOs and holograms to go with their drums, body paint and scarification. Where they are secretly the master race and the hapless whites are about to get their comeuppance.
Sorry. Gotta go with Howard on this one. |

| And of course the Academy Awards have to be politically correct and nominate this racist piece of crap for Best Pic.
Astonishing.
Superman in blackface. |

| I downloaded a rare 1970 Albert Heath album today entitled "Kawaida." On it, all the musicians have given themselves African names (as was trendy those days) and there's some spoken word overlay about Black consciousness and Black community and rebuilding Black pride. Turns out the title is a Black Nationalist concept about a separate Black nation inside America, championed by LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka) and some other followers of Malcolm X. The whole thing gradually fell apart, as I read the Wikipedia articles, due to getting entangled in anti-Semitism and Marxist dogma and homophobia.
Seems to me, "Black Panther" is cut from the same cloth. Black separatism isn't the answer to anything. Wiser heads have prevailed. |
