Discussion points.  I don’t necessarily subscribe to all of these, but they raise issues that have to be considered.

  • Homelessness.  If you provide housing for the poor you incentivize more people to seek discounted housing
  • Drug Addiction. If you treat addiction as a disease rather than a crime, you encourage more addictions
  • Immigration. If you allow uncontrolled Immigration you’ll get uncontrolled Immigration
  • Religion. Making laws respecting religion just encourages the creation of more Ponzi schemes
  • Gun Control. It’s true, gun laws only affect law-abiding citizens.  Without confiscation additional restrictions will do nothing
  • Climate Change. The damage is done.  Anything we do now will only harm our living standards without appreciably improving the environment

Malcolm Gladwell says 5% of the homeless cost 85% of the services provided (including policework and hospital care). Said it would be cheaper -- by far -- to take the chronically homeless (most of whom are mentally ill) and give them their own apartments, with medical supervision, than to continue to ignore them on the streets. Most of the rest of homelessness is transient, where people quickly find employment and homes on their own.

But of course there's no social will for "rewarding" the chronically homeless with goodies they didn't earn. Thank you Ronald Reagan for that bit of compassionate conservatism.

I read that an estimated 85+% of US homeless are either alcoholic, drug-addicted, or mentally ill, or some combination of the three. That makes them a pretty tough constituency to deal with, because neither the public nor the politicians are particularly sympathetic to those demographics.

We could start to make a dent by ending the war on drugs. That is obviously the right thing to do anyway, but it would also help some of the homeless.

We could improve our treatment of alcoholics by providing more actual treatment instead of stupid 12-step boondoggles.

And we could do much more (and better) in the area of mental health care. There were genuine problems with Reagan-era hospitals, so making changes was definitely in order. I don't think throwing the patients out onto the streets was the right idea, though.
