Watching a documentary on Netflix about the development of the next stage in sports car development, beyond mere sports cars, beyond supercars, into something they're calling "hypercars." There are three contenders (or were in 2015 when the film was made):
The technical innovations in these automobiles are many and impressive... but what I could't get past is the idea that each of these cars, at a price tag well north of a millions dollars, and production runs of approximately 300 (Porsche will do 918 of them), each of these cars SOLD OUT before they hit the market.
There are a lot of people in this world with a lot of money, and they're not buying groceries for poor people.

Not only are those cars all sold before they hit the market, many of them are for sale by invitation only. Ferrari has been doing that for years with their very-limited-production models.

I am struck first by how butt-ugly most of these are.

I believe the word you're looking for is "fugly."
Most of them are fucking gorgeous. But as the old saying goes, "Fugly is in the eye of the beholder."
